Privacy policy
Your data, explained in plain language.
This policy explains what Dera Talk collects, why, and what we deliberately never do. If anything here is unclear, email us and a human will explain.
Last updated: October 4, 2026
The short version
- Your phone number is your account — and it stays private by default.
- Your contact list is never bulk-uploaded. Finding friends happens only when you choose it.
- We never sell your data, and we don't put ads in your private chats.
- You can delete your account and your data at any time.
What we collect
Account basics. When you register we store your phone number, a display name, and (if you add them) a profile photo, bio, and address details. These exist so people can find you and verify it's really you.
Your content. Messages, media, and status updates you send are stored so the service can deliver them to the right people — including when the recipient is offline. Disappearing messages are removed when they expire. You can delete chats and messages; deletion applies on our servers and on devices that sync afterwards.
Business content. Your catalog, business hours, and public page details are public by choice — that's the point of a shopfront. Your khata (customer ledger) and order records are private to you, shared only with the customer they concern.
Wallet records. If you use wallet features, we keep transaction records as required for accounting and legal obligations. Identity verification documents, where requested, are used for verification only.
What we never do
- We never sell your personal data to anyone, for any price.
- We never run targeted advertising inside your private chats.
- We never bulk-upload, store, or 'sync' your phone's contact list in the background.
- We never write your phone number or message content into server logs, analytics, or error traces.
- We never reveal who searched for you, who you searched for, or anyone else's contacts.
Finding friends (contacts discovery)
Dera Talk can help you find which of your contacts already uses the app — but only under strict rules. When you explicitly use the "find contacts" feature, your phone numbers are converted into unreadable codes (a process called hashing) on your device before they reach our servers. We see only those codes.
- Results only ever tell you: which of your contacts are on Dera Talk. Nothing is ever shown to the other side.
- People who have turned discovery off in settings are never shown in anyone's results.
- You can turn the feature off entirely in Settings, and you can clear the record of your own lookups at any time.
- If you never use the feature, your contacts never leave your phone. Simple as that.
Your number and who can reach you
Your phone number is hidden from strangers. By default, only someone whose number you have saved — and who has saved yours — can connect that number to your profile. This rule is enforced on our servers, not just hidden in the app, so it holds even if someone writes their own software. You control profile photo, last-seen, status, and group-add permissions in Privacy settings.
Security
All traffic between your device and Dera Talk travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). Access to stored data inside our team is limited to what operations genuinely require. We keep logs minimal and content-free, we deploy protective measures like Scam Shield, and we act on abuse reports — including removing accounts.
Retention and deletion
We keep your data while your account is active and for the short period needed to run the service (for example, delivering an offline friend's message). Wallet and transaction records are retained as long as accounting law requires. When you delete your account, your profile and personal data are removed from our live systems; the remaining legal-retention records (if any) are the minimum the law forces us to keep.
Children
Dera Talk is not intended for children under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we remove it. Parents: you can report an account by emailing support@deratalk.com.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export, or delete your personal information from within the app, or by contacting us. We respond to every request. Because Dera Talk is built in Pakistan, we handle data under Pakistani law; where international standards (like GDPR principles) are stricter, we aim for those standards anyway.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll tell you inside the app before it takes effect — and we'll keep the plain language. The date at the top always shows the current version.
